Notes
- Cumby, Texas, Feb. 27 --- J. B. (Yank) Smith died at his residence here and was buried in the Cumby Cemetery. Mr. Smith was born in Boonville, Ind., March 1, 1837. At an early age his parents moved to Louisville, Ky., where he resided until in 1850, when he moved to Texas, but only remained a short while, going north and locating in Southern Illinois. At the outbreak of the war between the States, he enlisted in Company D of the Fifty-sixth Illinois Infantry, which was recruited in Southern Illinois and was commanded by General John A. Logan. He served all during the war and was most of the time in Kentucky and Tennessee. In 1884 he moved to Hopkins County, settling near old Tarrant, and in 1884 [sic] moved to Black Jack Grove, where he has since resided. He was a familiar figure on the streets of this place for nearly forty years and will be remembered by many former citizens who now live in other part of the State. His funeral services were conducted by Rev. H. M. Cowling, pastor of the Methodist Church of this place. He is survived by his wife, four daughters, one son, and several grandchildren. He also has a brother living at New Boston, in Bowie County.

- We know he was a civil war veteran from Metropolitan, Illinois, in Massac county, across the Ohio River from Paducah, KY.
His obit says he moved to Texas in 1850 for a short time before going to Illinois.
There is a J B Smith in the 1855 Illinois census in Massac County on page 19, family member number 8. Family member 7 is an Americus Smith. Cool name! Unforunately, this guy does not look like a relation.
There is a John B. Smith who married a Julia A. Wood in Massac County in 29 Sep 1872. If John didn't move to Texas until 1884, could this have been his first wife?
