Salmon was the son of Dexter and Hannah (Stevens) Ward of Poultney, Vermont. Salmon was married in 1818 to Susannah Proctor and they had 18 children, 2 sets of twins. The children were Lucy, Malvina, Matilda, Melinda, Clarinda, Lafayette, Madison, Emily, Clarissa, Columbia, Jennie, Harrison Oscar, Amy, Edgar, Edwin, Julia, Reuben and Alvira.
Around 1842, Salmon and several of his siblings, along with their families, moved west from Vermont. They settled in the southeastern portion of the Wisconsin Territory. Salmon and his brother, Dexter lived in Grant Co, WI; Asahel lived in WI; Matilda (Mrs Artemus Dean/Mrs. Samuel Clark) lived in Weyauwega, WI; Melinda (Mrs John Williams) and Reuben lived in Peoria, IL.
Salmon was a veteran of the War of 1812 and the Black Hawk Ward. Four of his sons- Madison, Edgar, Edwin and Reuben; three of his son-in-laws- Gorham Alexander, Thomas Varney, George Ritter, and one of his grandsons, Judson Cook, served in the Union forces during the Civil War. His son Madison died in 1863 near New Orleans, Louisiana. son-in-laws, Gorham and Thomas also died in service.
